Dnipro University of Technology — Compliance with the Time

The Department of Ecology and Environmental Technologies (until 2016 the Department of Ecology) was founded in 1998.

The purpose of the department is to provide professional training for specialists in the field of ecology, biology, environmental protection and rational environmental management in order to further guarantee an environmentally safe natural environment for the life and health of the population, the introduction of an environmentally balanced system of environmental management and conservation of natural ecosystems.

The department prepares specialists for educational levels:

- Bachelor and Doctor of Philosophy in specialty 091 "Biology";

- Bachelor and Master in specialty 101 "Ecology";

- Bachelor, Master and Doctor of Philosophy, specialty 183 "Environmental Technology".

The department was headed by prominent scientists in the field of ecology and balanced nature management - Professors Myroshnyk G.O. (1998-2001) and Gorova A.I. (2001-2016).

From 2017 the department is headed by Pavlichenko AV - Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology.

The training of specialists is provided by 4 professors, 6 associate professors, 2 senior teachers and 2 assistants.

Since 2001, the department has been operating a research and training and production center of environmental safety of nature and man - "EcoSafety".

In 2013, the Department of Ecological Technogenic Safety was established on the basis of SE Pavlograd Chemical Plant.

The department has a subject audience. prof. Myroshnyk G.O. (10/711) and computer class (10/710). The department operates a student scientific ecological center. prof. Dolinsky V.A.  (10/710).

In the initial process and research activities are used premises with a total area of 528 m 2 , located on the 7th floor of the educational building № 10. Classrooms for lectures, practicals and seminars occupy 354 m 2 ; computer class - 54 m 2 .

The laboratories of the Department of Ecology for carrying out educational laboratory and research works have the necessary laboratory equipment: chemical glass and ceramic vessels, mixers , heating and cooling devices, pH meters , ionomers , analytical scales, 11 microscopes for morphological studies. 6, one microscope for Olympus CX41 research and the like.

At the Student Science Center prof. V.A. Dolinsky installed the Multitouch Panasonic UB-T580W interactive whiteboard , the Optoma DX-342 projector , upgraded the lighting system and installed energy-saving lamps.

Within the framework of the four-year educational project "Biotechnology in mining - integration of new technologies into educational practice" , implemented jointly with the Technical University " Freiberg Mining Academy" (TU "FGA", Germany) (project supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)) Program "Professionally Associated Partnership with Universities of Developing Countries") obtained: Laboratory ventilation cabinet with forced exhaust system, pH meter / conductometer / solimeter / oximeter laboratory MP551, scales АС220.R2, centrifuge CM-6M 4h50ml the rotor (6M.01) Dissemination RLU-3 versatile distilation apparatus , refrigerators, Samsung , flipcharts , multimedia projectors and others.

The department actively cooperates with universities of I-II levels of accreditation. The staff of the department take part in the work of the jury of regional scientific-practical conferences and competitions in Ecology. Students and students of technical schools and colleges are constantly participating in conferences held at the department. Employees of the department are involved in the management of research work of students of the Small Academy of Sciences.

The Department of Ecology and TZNS signed and implemented agreements with both state and private enterprises (institutions), including: State Enterprise "Pavlohrad Chemical Plant" Scientific Production Association , LLC "Ukrprommineral", DTEK Academy, Dnepr Environmental Policy Department of the City Council, the Department of Parks and Recreation of the Dnieper City Council, CP "Center for Environmental Monitoring of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council", Public Formation for Public Order "Public Patrol", Public Union "Center for Innovation" "Stairs to the Future" and others. The Agreements are the subject of cooperation in the field of introduction of qualitatively new conditions of higher education educational activity; deepening the interaction of production with the educational process; preparation of a new generation of highly qualified specialists for solving urgent problems of ecologically balanced functioning of industrial enterprises and other economic entities; conducting of training / retraining and professional development of own personnel through realization of joint seminars, courses, all types of practices and internships by students of the university.

The scientific activity of the department is aimed at the development of technologies to reduce the negative impact of industrial enterprises on the state of environmental objects and public health.

The main directions of scientific activity of the department are:

  • Environmental safety and resource conservation in the mining and metallurgical complex;
  • Development of theoretical bases for the assessment of environmental and man-made risks created by hazardous mining processes;
  • Development of theoretical bases, methods and means of protection of the person and the environment from the consequences of the actions of the enterprises of the mining industry;
  • Development of scientific methods for monitoring the ecological situation in the industrial regions of Ukraine;
  • Development of biotechnological methods of protection and restoration of the state of environmental objects;
  • Development of methods for dust removal of industrial objects;
  • Development of technologies for extraction of useful components from industrial and household waste;
  • Ecological safety and resource saving in the liquidation of mining enterprises;
  • Study of the negative changes of land use related to the degradation of the soil cover in the areas of functioning of industrial enterprises;
  • Development of phytoremediation technology of contaminated territories;
  • Study parameters of natural slopes, man-made slopes (dumps, dams slime storages );
  • Substantiation of ways of reducing the level of environmental danger of road transport;
  • Justification of technological solutions for environmentally sound disposal of hazardous, including medical waste, etc.

The scientists of the department actively cooperate with foreign scientific and educational institutions of Germany, Poland, Lithuania, England, Hungary, Kazakhstan and other countries:

У TU "Freiberg Mining Academy";

  •  Rhine-Westphalia Technical University;
  •  Krakow Mining and Metallurgy Academy;
  •  Kazakh National Technical University . K.I. Satpaeva;
  •  Cambridge University.

Employees and students involved in the implementation of two scientific and educational projects: "Biotechnology in mining - the integration of new technologies in educational practice" (01.01.2015 - 31.12.2018) and PhD program "EcoMining : the development of integrated PhD program in sustainable mining" (01/01/2019 - 12/31/2022) between TU "Freiberg Mining Academy" and NTU "Dniprovsk Polytechnic".These projects provide unique opportunities to study the latest environmental technologies and internship prospects in the modern research laboratories of TU “FGA”. Within the framework of these projects, summer schools, trainings and conferences were held on the basis of the university, during which lectures and practical sessions were held by specialists and experts with practical experience in the field of environmental protection of industrial regions.

Teachers of the Department of Ecology and Environmental Technologies perform joint research work with foreign partners aimed at solving current environmental problems of Ukraine and other countries of the world. Students and postgraduate students are actively involved in the research, who have the opportunity to further study at leading scientific and educational institutions abroad.

Students have the opportunity to undergo scientific training at International Summer Schools, which are held annually at NTU "Dniprovsk Polytechnic" in collaboration with specialists from Brandenburg Technical University with the financial support of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). During the internship, students discuss the pressing issues of integrated environmental planning, sustainable regional development, environmental management and adaptation to climate change.
