Representatives of our department joined a journalistic investigation together with Suspilne Dnipro. At the journalists’ request, we conducted radiation measurements and provided expert commentary on potential risks associated with old Soviet-era Christmas ornaments. No panic — only real data, instruments, and correct interpretation 🔬📊

✨ Why did this topic emerge? Some Soviet Christmas decorations were produced using luminous paints that contained radioactive substances, such as radium combined with phosphors. Decades ago, these materials created a glowing effect ✨, but today they attract the attention of environmental scientists and radiation safety experts 🌍

🔎 Our measurements showed no exceedance of natural background radiation — all values were within internationally accepted safety approaches, including IAEA standards. However, from an environmental and long-term health perspective, potential risks may arise if ornaments are damaged or broken and the old paint degrades into dust. This is why awareness, careful handling of old items, and informed decision-making remain essential 💚
